Card Zero

Some cards aren’t meant to be found. They are meant to be followed.

The night before Kabir Anand returns to Mount Sarvak, the mountain that made him a coward, a stranger in a mustard-yellow jacket hands him a tarot card: The Fool, number zero.

It doesn’t seem to do anything. That’s what makes it dangerous.

Every reckless step on the climb is rewarded. A shortcut over a snow bridge saves the team from a collapsing icefall. A storm never arrives. A voice on the radio sounds like the partner he lost three years ago. Then Kabir reaches a summit crowded with the frozen cards of climbers who never came down.

One card. One mountain. No way down.
